Q.
I notice that your name is 'Relationship Matters', do you offer counselling that has nothing to do with relationships issues?

A.
We offer counselling for Men, Women & Couples. Most of our counselling services would be classed as 'General Counselling' for individuals.
We have a Male counsellor for general counselling issues for Men, which may or may not have anything to do with 'Relationships'.
We have a Female counsellor for general counselling issues for Women, which may or may not have anything to do with 'Relationships'.
We also offer 'Couples Counselling' and is usually counselling to help resolve a relationship issue.

Q.
I am too nervous to come along to counselling - I'm a shy person, I am not sure that I could speak with a stranger for a whole hour?

A.
Your counsellor understands that you will feel nervous, particularly on your first visit. The truth is, lots of people are shy by nature and thats perfectly okay.
You don't need to know exactly what to say or do, your counsellor is trained to help you draw out your issue/story/concerns. There is absolutely no pressure, your counsellor is fully trained and will gently work with you to get things started & help you along the process. You are not on your own...your counsellor is there to help you feel as comfortable as possible and to help facilitate the session, while you remain in control throughout the process.

Q.
Who should see a counsellor?

A.
Counselling is for anyone who is looking to set goals & move forward or for those looking for new strategies/ways of doing things in their lives.
It is also good for people who need a safe place to talk and unload what is on their mind, helping people to isolate and find what it is they need in their life to help restore balance.
Counselling is a talk therapy and can be useful for many issues, large or small.

Q.
What happens when I come along - What should I expect?

A.
When you come along to see either Christopher or Kerry here at Relationship Matters Ballarat, they will meet with you at the arranged time...there is no need to be early, as there is no waiting - you will be seen straight away at the time you have chosen. Our counselling room is warm, comfortable, peaceful and has a relaxed atmosphere where confidentiality is assured. On your first visit you will be invited to fill in a 'New Client Intake Form' - This normally would take around 2 - 3 minutes. We also have bottled watter & sugar lollies available for you if you need. Your counsellor will assist you in being able to tell your story, help to bring clarity/insights and work through your issues/concerns toward your goals. Counselling is a relaxed process and there is no need to feel anxious about coming - it could be likened to sitting down having a chat to a trusted and helpful confidante.

Q.
How often do I need to come to counselling? How long will I be in counselling?

A.
You would normally meet with your counsellor on a weekly basis and usually at the same time each week, however the times can also change if your time slot becomes inconvenient to you.
How long you will need in counselling will depend on a number of factors...what the issues are, goals are, etc. You are in complete control over how long you stay - you will not be under any obligation. Your counsellor will be able to assist you in giving their thoughts on how long you might need, in general, many clients would spend from 2 - 5 sessions on smaller issues which are easily addressed, and might spend around 6 - 12 sessions on some larger issues or where there are several issues that need addressing. Some clients will use counselling as a weekly 'therapy session' where they are free to 'download' their thoughts and feelings and work through issues that come up during their week...Every client is different, your counsellor will work along with you and what your needs are.
